Fit isn’t just about the furniture’s own size
Even if a gap matches a piece of furniture’s exact dimensions, it can still be unfit to place once you factor in walkways and door or drawer clearance. Estimating the following margins too is the key.
Walking space
Leave about 60cm for a side passage, or around 90cm where people pass face-to-face or need room to work, so it doesn’t feel cramped.
Door & drawer clearance
Beyond the unit’s own size, you also need space in front for doors and drawers to open fully — this matters especially for chests and storage units.
Chair pull-out space
For dining chairs, allow 60–90cm behind the chair for sitting down and standing up. Think of it as the table’s footprint plus this margin.
Fridge & appliance venting
Refrigerators need clearance on both sides, above, and behind for heat venting, plus space in the direction the door swings open.
Doors & windows
Also check that furniture doesn’t block the room door’s swing area or overlap with window and outlet positions.
